The process of returning activated sludge to the treatment basin can have undesirable effects on final settling if not optimized. High TSS concentration in the return effluent can indicate incomplete process.

Monitor return activated sludge effluent in real time and be alerted to unsatisfactory conditions in the final settlement tank before they turn into a compliance violation. Hach’s RTC-RAS Software calculates optimum return sludge rate by comparing the TSS concentration in the aeration tank with that of the return activated sludge. Additional measurements of sludge levels and turbidity (optional) in the final effluent help ensure good effluent quality and adequate removal of solids, COD/BOD and phosphorus.
