When phosphorus is discharged in wastewater, usually in the form of PO 4, it “fertilises” algae and aquatic plants so they multiply and deplete the oxygen in streams, rivers and bays, ultimately choking out larger organisms and disrupting the healthy balance of the ecosystem.

We all know that Phosphorus is the most common cause of water quality failures in the UK, and more than 50% of rivers and 75% of lakes currently exceed the set standard. Regulations exist to protect water, wildlife and people from uncontrolled amounts of phosphorus in wastewater, and these regulations have an economic impact on your municipal and industrial treatment facilities. Although further investment is needed there are costs involved in removing phosphorus from wastewater, the costs of failing to remove it adequately or reliably are far greater and include steep fines levied by environmental regulators, fish kills or algae blooms that impact community water sources, and negative impacts on the reputation of the water utility as a neighbour, employer and brand.

Next Generation Phosphorus Removal

Hach’s RTC-P is a load-based system that optimizes chemical phosphorus removal by adjusting chemical dosing in real time through the continuous measurement of phosphate concentration and flow. By maintaining consistent effluent phosphorus values and enhancing your chemical phosphorus control system, RTC-P enables compliance certainty around the clock.

Once the system is programmed with a PO 4-P setpoint, it continuously measures PO 4-P concentration and wastewater flow rate, calculating the minimum amount of precipitant required to match the biological phosphorus uptake. The system will automatically switch to fallback strategies if input signals inflow or PO 4-P are not available.
