Wessex Water: Securing Ammonium Compliance & Energy Savings

June 14, 2021

The Institute of Water Magazine has published a story about How Wessex Water's Holdenhurst WRC has managed to secure ammonium compliance and energy savings by using real time control.

Wessex Water have been operating Holdenhurst STW near Bournemouth with Hach’s RTC system to optimise the aeration system since 2010. The system combines both energy saving, by reducing blower power and dissolved oxygen (DO) levels during low load periods and increasing DO set points during periods of high loading to reduce consent risks.

Over the past 10 years several optimisation steps have been delivered, e.g. installation of a Hach Nitrification Real Time Controller (N-RTC) and upgrading from ammonium ISE probe to a more accurate Hach Amtax analysers, and much more.

Results
Site operators has measured a 25% reduction in blower power demand since the RTC was installed while improving the site's ammonium compliance.
