Triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) is a versatile chemical compound widely used as a redox indicator in cell viability assays.


Redox reactions occur naturally in all biological systems. These reactions involve the transfer of electrons from one chemical species to another. Through a series of steps, redox reactions enable cells to capture energy from the breakdown of food molecules, ultimately generating ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a molecule that stores and transfers energy within cells. In these reactions, one chemical species is oxidized (loses an electron), while another is reduced (gains an electron).


When reduced by cellular enzymes, triphenyltetrazolium chloride forms a red formazan product, allowing for accurate quantitative measurement of cell viability and metabolic activity. (Only living cells can reduce TTC to the red product).
