Proper disinfection is critical: without enough chlorine, harmful pathogens can cause serious health risks, but too much chlorine in treated water is toxic to aquatic life. Hach’s RTC-C/DC Software measures chlorine demand in real time—as it’s affected by fluctuating temperature, flow, TRC and pH—to deliver the precise chemical dosing to meet effluent chlorine limits. It maintains a user-defined CT value (concentration x contact time) in the contact tank by adjusting the chemical disinfectant dosage based on both influent flow and measurement of TRC at the end of the tank. It then releases the minimum amount of dechlorination chemical necessary to achieve effluent compliance. Although RTC-C/DC is a standardized solution, it includes built-in flexibility to provide additional calculations such as Total Chlorine Demand, Instantaneous Chlorine Demand, Chlorine Decay Demand, By-Product Formation (TTHM & HAA) Estimation, and Estimate of Log Inactivation. Fallback strategies, safety limits and condition-based monitoring are pre-programmed and configured to your specifications during commissioning.
